Wow, am I bored or what? Just kidding. I'm making a list of Mary Sues and Gary Stu's that I've found in various books and movies.
For those of you who don't know, a Mary Sue is a female character found all too often in stories. She is beautiful, generally has "special abilities", is extremely virtuous, and at least one canon character falls in love with her. Gary Stu is her lesser-known cousin, who posses several of the same qualities put into manly form. Rich, handsome , strong, whatever. Prince Charming. So, without further ado, here is my list.
Mary Sues
------------
1.Arya (Eragon)
2.Christine Daae (Phantom of the Opera)
3.Katrina (Eragon)
4.Princess Leia (Star Wars)
5.Jane Bennet Bingley (Pride & Prejudice)
6.Belle (Beauty & the Beast)
7.Susan Pevensie (Chronicles of Narnia)
8.Ramandu's Daughter (Chronicles of Narnia)
9.Arwen (Lord of the Rings; perhaps the biggest Mary Sue of all...)
10.Jazelle (Enchanted)
11.Dianna Berry (Anne of Green Gables)
12.Lady Dasha (River Secrets)
13. Cinderella (uh, Cinderella)
Gary Stu's
------------
1.Raoul (Phantom of the Opera)
2.Peter Pevensie (Chronicles of Narnia)
3.King Tirian (Chronicles of Narnia)
4.Roran Stronghammer (Eragon)
5.Qui Gon Jen(I don't know how to spell his name!!) (Star Wars)
6.Obi Wan (Star Wars)
7.Arthur Denniston (Shadow of the Bear)
8.Finn (Enna Burning)
9.Prince/ King Geric (Goose Girl)
10. Luke Skywalker (Star Wars)
11.Prince Gwydion (Chronicles of Prydain)
12. Aragorn (Lord of the Rings; probably the one of the biggest Gary Stu's of all. No wonder he and Arwen ended up together...)
13.Prince Charming (duh...)
Wow, that felt good to acknowledge that. If you disagree with any of my choices, or have one of your own to add, please feel free to comment on it on the comment board!!
(Just so you know, I'll probably be adding more on the comment board...;)

ok, duh gazelle is on that list, she's SUPPOSED to be a mary su!! i completely agree with your list, except for Roran because he (as shown in Brisngr, which i finished!) has a problem with obeying orders. other than that i agree. (if i was going to pick one person from eragon to marry, i think it would be roran, or MAYBE eragon... idk why.) - Becca <3
I admit, I kind of hesitated about putting Roran on the list... but it seemed to me like he was strong, and smart, always escaping difficult positions, and whatever else, I mean,it was like he never did anything wrong!! When he disobeyed orders, it was to the good of those he was protecting. But I'd totally marry Roran anyways!!
I don't think a Mary Sue is always virtuous and good (Arya isn't terribly so). But they're usually cardboardish and/or ideal. Same with Gary Stu's.
Ooh, I totally agree about Arya. But Belle? She's a bookworm! :D She's such a departure from other Disney princesses, and I love her. Jasmine from Aladdin I might definitely call a Mary Sue, though.
Susan isn't exactly a Mary Sue. She's just rather boring in the way that some real life people can be boring. Not in a glamorous-totally-made-up-way. Ramandu's Daughter... I agree only because we don't learn enough about her to figure out her character AT ALL. :( She always seemed sort of like a wise fairy tale character, but wiser, if you know what I mean.
Diana Barry? Really? She's such an idiot sometimes, but that's why I would never consider her a Mary Sue. Mary Sues are always brilliant. :P
Cinderella - totally agree.
My biggest and favorite Mary Sue is Nancy Drew. Ohmygoodness. She's just... gah. She's smart, beautiful, gets a lot of attention from men, never panics, has a perfect father, perfect friends, perfect boyfriend, and never gets killed by all the villains she faces. And does anyone else find it amusing that her father has convenient friends for her to stay with in every single place she goes?
And then, Sarah Collingwood from the Seven Sleepers series. In every book, her appearance is described, just in case we've forgotten since the last book. (The funny thing is, the author sometimes forgets and gives her a different eye color) She's sweet with that sassy attitude that comes with many Mary Sues.
And Ginny from Harry Potter. Again, the red-headed-spunkyness... it's just fake. I like her, but she's not the best character I've ever read about.
Oh! Oh! And Edith from The Inheritance by Louisa May Alcott. In my eyes, she epitomizes Mary Sues. She is the QUEEN Mary Sue. She doesn't have magical abilities or fight bad guys, but she cries every time someone says something mean to her, and cries when someone says something nice to her, and helps the poor, and plays piano beautifully, and everybody loves her except for that one wicked rival girl, but she is patient and good etc through it all. (SPOILER) She's an orphan, but you find out that she's really nobility. Haha.
On your Gary Stus: Arthur Denniston!?!?! *weeps* ;) He's one of my favorite fictional heroes. He and his brother Ben (aka Fish). If he's a Gary Stu, then I'm in danger of being a real live Mary Sue, because I'm really like him. I mean, a lot. I haven't been sent to Juvenile Detention, but we have similar temperaments and we both love G.K. Chesterton and poetry.
Hmm... for Gary Stu, I would add Nancy Drew's boyfriend, Ned Nickerson. And... I want to say Romeo from Romeo and Juliet because he drives me crazy, but he's really very vivid as a character. He's annoying as he can be and stupid, but he's not cardboard.
I've done more disagreeing here than I have done in the whole month of October. That's VERY unlike me, just so you know! I really like your blog. :D I found it via a comment you left on The Shadow Of the Bear Movie Blog.
Hmm, Delaney I haven't read a bunch of the books you've mentioned, but I'd really like to! I like finding a good Mary Su just so I can laugh at them! Jk!
I hesitated about putting Arthur Denniston on the list simply because he is my favorite book character in the whole world. But I thought about it, and he seemed to fit all the standards (rich, virtuous, HANDSOME, and totally awesome...) so I (feeling like a traitor) put him on the list.
Susan I thought was a Mary Su because she's just kind of sensitive, motherly, beautiful, and all that. But she is kind of boring...
Nancy Drew never even crossed my mind when I made this list!! I don't know why, but you're right, she is a total Mary Su!!
Ugh, Romeo is so boring! I mean really, he has no character what-so-ever! (which is why I didn't put him on the list)I found that play depressing because my favorite character (Mercutio) was the first to die.
Glad you like my blog!! =D
You should definitely read The Inheritance, but expect to laugh. It's so dramatic. Louisa May Alcott wrote it when she was 17, which is, perhaps, SOME excuse.
But Arthur is flawed. :P Gary Stus are commonly found in old fifties movies' protagonists: strong, handsome, protective, and never ever vulnerable. Bear is vulnerable, which makes him so real. Yeah, he's great. :D
Yeah, Romeo & Juliet is depressing and annoying but for some reason I really like the play. Not the characters, not the story, just the play. The language, and the feuding scenes mostly. ;)
I agree, Gary Stu is very often found in fifties movies lead characters.
I also agree about Bear's being vulnerable. He is. But he faces it like a man.
So on this point, we shall have to agree to disagree. Alright?
Right! Love your Reepicheep picture, by the way. :D
I finished The Inheritance by Louisa May Alcott, and I totally agree about Edith!!! SUCH a Mary Su!!
JMJ
now is being named a mary sue ect. bad???? I can't figure out if it's bad to be on the lists or not. if it is bad then i shall totally disagree with some things. such as Arwen being "perfect" why is that bad???? Elves are SUPPOSED to be perfect. they're kinda like angels. and I think aragorn is a good portrayal of a christ figure. Luke is Definitaly not prince charming. Obi wan and Qui Gon Jin are not perfect by a long shot. they are jedi (which is cool) but they both die in the end. Leia is not beautiful so that counts her out. how do you justify Ramandu daughter? and I agree with the top people in that I don't think Bear should be there. he is too nice. if it's good then I agree with pretty much all. except roran. I thought he was a complete sill.
Welcome to the Forum! :) and funny blog, I like it!

I'm not saying being a Mary Sue or Gary Stu is necessarily a bad thing; it just is. (And my view on Mary Su/Gary Stu-ism is rather different than most)You can view it however you like. Though please note that several of the characters I mentioned here (Aragorn, Qui Gon Jin, King Tirian, BEAR!!! and a couple others) are some of my favorite fictional characters. If I thought it was bad, I'd probably disagree with most of what I put on here, too. But that's just my view. Anyway, I'm not sure if I'm even making sense now (Long night), so I shan't say much more. But welcome to my little world!
You forgot Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, from Twilight. :)
Hehe, well actually, at the time I made this, I hadn't read Twilight yet. But now that I have; I agree. :)
Arwen and Aragorn. Lol perfect couple indeed. I love them both though.
And Belle? Hey, she fell for a beast and what's on the inside. I don't think she should be on that list.
Giselle? Oh definitely. But at least she's got a good personality.
You should have put Bella Swan there. The name's already more than enough to inform you.
The only reason I put Belle on there is because... there are next to no character flaws within her. Don't get me wrong, she is my FAVORITE Disney princess, but still...
Bella Swan... yes indeed. But as I mentioned in an above comment, at the time I made this, I hadn't read any of the Twilight Saga.
You forgot Bella Swan.
100% Pure Mary Sue!
(boo Twilight! Boooooo!)
Some of the Mary-Sues you listed, though, don't seem too Mary Sue-ish too me.
Especially Princess Leia; she is a princess. DUH! I think Princesses are supposed to act like that and try to get whatever they want so yeah...
But nice list.
*You should relaly consider adding Bella Swan.
