Narnia Declawed!

A few years back it was believed that HarperCollins, publishers of the Narnia books, meant to rewrite them and remove all evidence of Christian allegory. This was not true, but it does makes one think: What would the stories be like without the Christian influence?Here's my attempt:

Once there were four children whose names were Peter--oh, wait, he was a disciple. Keys to the kingdom and all that. Well, then: Once there were four children whose names were Percy, Susan--oops, that name's based on the Biblical Susanna. And wasn't there a Santa Lucia, too? So: Once there were four children whose names were Percy, Sybil, Edmund, and Lana.

Moving right along, these four kids entered a magical land via armoire. There they became involved in an epic struggle of good versus evil--oh, wait, there's no such thing as absolutes. No one is all evil. The Witch is just misunderstood. She probably had an unhappy childhood. Oh, and we can't keep calling her the Witch. The implies censure. We'll call her pagan--no, that might remind people that there's an opposite to paganism, such as religion. Ah! We'll call her a Child of Nature. So, these four kids join forces with the local inhabitants and try to overthrow the Witch--er, Child of Nature (despite her very stable and mutually beneficial reign.) However, lacking any true leadership (That would mean Him, and we certainly can't include Him.), the children and other rebels soon are turned into overlarge paperweights.

Huh, well, that won't sell. Let's try this: We'll include Him, but only after a fashion. So, the children go to meet Aslan and Edmund is rescued. Then Nature Girl comes to claim the traitor, according to ancient law. Aslan, not being a type of Christ, cannot die and be resurrected, so he has to give Edmund back, to fulfill the law. Nature Girl kills Edmund (but he had it coming, after all), and the four thrones are never filled.

No, no. That won't do. Well, how about this: Nature Girl comes to claim Edmund, and Aslan says, "No, that's just tough. You can't have him. I don't have to honor the law my old man put into Narnia years ago."--wait, that implies creation. Can't have that. Aha!: The Witch, er, Child of Nature, comes for Edmund, and Aslan eats her (So what if it was supposed to be a parley? Getting to eat your enemies during a truce is one of the beauties of situational ethics.). Everybody else lives happily ever after, including the wolves, hags, efreets, etc. who are shown the error of their ways and reintegrated into society. The four children, not satisfied with the concept of "divine right of kings," hold elections to see who will be the new president of Narnia. Some dwarf, who was never given fair opportunity for advancement in Nature Girl's regime, gets the job. The kids go back through the wardrobe. Book sales plummet.

Pumpkins!!!

A bunch of my siblings came home for a visit recently;it was a blast!!! I seriously love spending time with my fam!! While they were here, we carved some pretty sweet pumpkins!! Here, take a look!!!:

Random fact: did you know that originally, it wasn't pumpkins, but turnips that you carved? (I mean, I was wondering how you even managed to carve a turnip...)

Mary Sue & Gary Stu list!!

Wow, am I bored or what? Just kidding. I'm making a list of Mary Sues and Gary Stu's that I've found in various books and movies.
For those of you who don't know, a Mary Sue is a female character found all too often in stories. She is beautiful, generally has "special abilities", is extremely virtuous, and at least one canon character falls in love with her. Gary Stu is her lesser-known cousin, who posses several of the same qualities put into manly form. Rich, handsome , strong, whatever. Prince Charming. So, without further ado, here is my list.

Random Rambling: Should there be a more detailed Narnia?

*note: LotR stands for Lord of the Rings; CoN stands for Chronicles of Narnia*

A certain friend and I were talking, (she's a LotR freak and I'm a CoN geek) and certain friend said that she didn't like CoN because there's not enough detail. But she loves LotR because of all the description! (If you have not read LotR, then I shall sum up a bit of J.R.R Tolkien's lovely description: pages. Upon pages.) Certain Friend said that if he (C.S. Lewis) had wanted to target a higher age group, he should have put in more description. Without all the description, he was seeming to target a group of three-year olds, and he's just really not telling us what it's like there.

I, on the contrary, believe that one of the beauties of the Narnia series is that there isn't a ton (i.e, pages upon pages) of description. It's like C.S. Lewis leaves whatever lies beyond the wardrobe door up to us. We get out of it what we put into it. Whereas in LotR, everything is very defined, and it seems that you're just watching what is going on, not being a part of the story. (honestly, in the three times that I've read LotR, I've skipped the parts of description and lineage) Anyway, I suppose I'm just rambling on, so I'll stop now, but please tall me what you think on the issue.

Lol! I just have to share this!!!Today I went to audition for a local theatre's production of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and you'll never guess which part I came out with: Mr. Beaver!!! I couldn't believe it!! I mean, I'm happy to get a part at all, but this just made me... shall we say, surprised? Lol, wish me luck!!

The Goose Girl

A friend recently lent me a book based on a popular Grimm's fairy-tale, called The Goose Girl, by Shannon Hale. I really wasn't expecting much at first from the title (I mean really, goose girl?), but as I read on, I became pleasantly surprised by the quality and suspense within the pages.
It starts out with the birth of Crown Princess Anidori-Kildara Talianna Isilee of Kildenree. While she grows up, it is evident that she has special gifts of conversing with nature. As time goes on, she is promised in marriage to the prince of a neighboring country called Bayern. When the time comes, to travel to Bayern for the marriage, Ani (as she was called) was devastated to learn that she would no longer be queen of Kildenree, as she had been training to become all her life. She, her lady-in-waiting, and her escort of forty guards set off to meet the prince in a three month journey towards Bayern. Long story short, Ani is betrayed by her lady-in-waiting as she pretends to take Ani's position, and then poor Ani is reduced to the status of a goose girl. While working with the palace animals, Ani becomes friends with many of the other workers in the fields. After a while, Ani's story comes out, and her friends, coupled with Ani's nature speaking gift, set out to reclaim Ani's title


What I really enjoyed about this story was that the main character (Ani) was one I could relate to. Unlike most stories with females as main characters, Ani was not strong and brilliant and wonderful at first. She was just a normal teenage girl with an extraordinary title; going through adolescence and trying her best to be what everyone expected from a crown princess. As the story went on, I was astounded by the character growth of her person! She became a little stronger, a little wiser, and much more comfortable with herself. And also (though I didn't mention it), this story is a romance. I liked the romance because the story line wasn't totally and completely consumed by it. It wasn't heavy, ( i.e., going into much more detail than I care to read), and this romance wasn't inappropriate at all. I found it very sweet.

The few draw-backs from this tale are really nothing dramatic; A few times, certain antagonists imply things I don't wish to repeat. There is war starting, and towards the conclusion of the tale, a small battle breaks out between the protagonists and the antagonists; thus there is much killing and describing of the scene. (I.e:... "and so he swung his sword around and chopped of his opponent's head, blood dripping from his sword..." not directly from the book, but same idea).

Overall, I thought it was a wonderful book; The characters were easy to relate to as well as strong, and the moral is quite clear. I highly recommend reading this for anyone with a taste for adventure and fantasy.

How I got my name (Prepare for EXTREME cheesiness!)

As I said, this is going to sound cheesy, so prepare. So I was reading some book or other, and I came across a word I didn't know: serendipity. I thought, "Oh, cool word! I'll have to look it up some time!" and promptly forgot about it. Later on, as I was trying to come up with a blogging name, the word randomly popped into my mind. On a hunch, I went in search of a dictionary. As we are still parshly in boxes from moving into our new home, it took a little while before I located the book in question. But, at last I triumphed, and looked up my word: serendipity: the gift of finding a valuable thing un-looked for. I thought, "Sweet. That's my name." Because, you see, I find myself in a case of serendipity every time we move. I nearly always think, "Ugh, another move, and there's no way I can make friends as good as I've had here, so why even try?" But then, as a sweet kiss-from-Christ (as my mother would say), God ALWAYS puts priceless friends in my path even when I'm not looking for them. So now I want to thank all of my wonderful friends (you KNOW who you are!), and know that I thank God for you on a regular basis. God Bless!!
